Incorporate anti-tobacco messages into your lesson plans, such as smoking experiments in Science; essays on smoking in English; smoking equations in Math; effects of smoking in Health; review of cigarette ads to determine who tobacco companies target with their ads in Social Studies..
Have students research and write stories for the school newspaper about the social and health consequences of smoking.
Hold a contest for the best stop-smoking creation: a poster, essay, song, debate, radio or TV commercial, home video, editorial, poetry, slogan, banner, cartoon, joke, comedy routine, or not-smoking pledge.
Ask the school newspaper to cover tobacco issues, including health effects, cost of using tobacco, social ramifications (it stinks to the opposite sex), and the marketing practices of the tobacco industry.
Organize high school and junior high students to put on a show for elementary school students in your district. The older kids learn from writing and producing a show while the younger kids learn from people they admire.
Encourage students to "adopt" their parents or other loved ones who smoke. Students can promise to provide moral support and keep a watchful eye on their charges that are trying to quit as part of the Great American Smokeout. Hello Amarillo Area educators! In order to prevent adolescent tobacco use in Amarillo Tobacco Free Amarillo (TFA) focuses much of its attention on tobacco related prevention materials. We focus on CDC approved tobacco prevention programs with proven results. TFA purchases these materials for schools free of charge to the teachers requesting the items. A partial list can be found below to highlight some of the programs purchased in the past. More About this Product
McGruff the Crime Dog® and his teenage friend, Jason, utilize interviews with health experts and smokers to help students discover some "burning issues" about tobacco use. The video covers tobacco's addictive properties, the harmful chemicals it contains, and its role in causing such illnesses as cancer, empysema, and heart disease. Students learn that smoking stains teeth and fingers, causes bad breath and ages the appearance of skin. Information is presented on how cigarette advertisers target young people in their ads and the dangers of secondhand smoke.
Get Real About Tobacco K-3
This research-based, multimedia tobacco prevention program meets CDC guidelines for addressing the subject of tobacco and its uses and abuses. Get Real about Tobacco aims to educate students on the harmful effects of tobacco, help them spread the message to others, and encourage current users to quit. Developed by the Comprehensive Health Education Foundation (C.H.E.F.), each interactive curriculum kit contains age-appropriate material from videos, worksheets and games to CD-ROMs, lesson plans and posters. This unique collection of multimedia provides instructors with tools to address complicated health and wellness subjects for Grades K-3.
No Puff Pals
The No-Puff Pals teach children to be aware of tobacco as a harmful substance, recognize the forms it may take and understand that advertisements don't speak the truth. Students learn how to use their own powers to refuse tobacco.
Students relate with superheroes, "Max, Sasha and Lance," and are able to fully understand the dangers of tobacco. This No-Puff Pals "Tobacco Prevention" Value Package is a great way to get the anti-tobacco message to young people. The bright colors and animated style make this series appropriately constructed for very young children.
The No-Puff Pals activity book offers a wide variety of games that will not only enhance the child’s knowledge of tobacco but will also increase their reading and writing skills.
And, the posters and stickers are a great way to reinforce the ideas presented in the activity book and video, and can be taken home to share with their families and friends.
Donnie Dinosaur Tobacco Trouble Classroom Set
Donnie and his friends teach young children to stay tobacco free in Donnie Dinosaur’s Tobacco Trouble Package.
Kids tend to think that because they see older people or those in the public spot light smoking that it is acceptable and appropriate. Yet, with the right education they will realize that adults don't always do what is healthiest for his/her own body and children should never smoke or use tobacco of any kind because it is even more harmful to them.
Children learn these lessons along with others from the lovable puppet, Donnie Dinosaur and his friends. Through songs and bright colors he shines light on the dangers of tobacco in any form. Donnie shows kids the harm that smoking and smokeless tobacco has on their bodies.
In Donnie’s video two children take a magical journey through the forest where they meet Donnie Dinosaur. Donnie teaches the children about the dangers of nicotine. They learn that this harmful drug could cause long and short-term health problems. They also learn that media and advertising attempt to make smoking and the use of other tobacco products appear cool and fun, while in actuality it is neither.
Children retain the information presented in the video due to the repetitive nature.

The Botvin LifeSkills Training Elementary School program is a comprehensive, dynamic, and developmentally appropriate substance abuse and violence prevention program designed for upper elementary school students. This highly effective curriculum has been proven to help increase self-esteem, develop healthy attitudes, and improve their knowledge of essential life skills – all of which promote healthy and positive personal development.
PROGRAM LEARNING OBJECTIVES

- Provides students with skills to enhance self-esteem, reduce stress and anxiety, make good decisions, and manage anger.
- General Social Skills

- Enables students to build defenses against tobacco by identifying facts about the effects of smoking and exploring why people smoke or don't smoke.
Project Towards No Tobacco Use

It is designed to counteract several different causes of tobacco use simultaneously, because the behavior is determined by multiple causes. It works well for a wide variety of youth who may have different risk factors influencing their tobacco use.
It teaches awareness of misleading social information, develops skills that counteract social pressure to use tobacco, and provides information about the physical consequences of tobacco use, such as addiction.
Grades 6-8
LifeSkills Training Middle School
PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The Botvin LifeSkills Training Middle School program is a groundbreaking substance abuse and violence prevention program based on more than 25 years of rigorous scientific research and is one of the most effective evidence-based programs used in schools today. In addition to helping kids resist drug, alcohol, and tobacco use, the LifeSkills Training Middle School program also effectively helps to reduce violence and other high-risk behaviors.

Science, Tobacco & You is a multidisciplinary, multimedia, science curriculum resource. Our goal is to promote scientific literacy by encouraging students to ask and answer questions. In this case, the medium is the issue of tobacco use and prevention.
