About the Project
The Tobacco Free Amarillo (TFA) project has been in existence for approximately seven and a half years. The partnering components of TFA: Media, Schools, Community, Cessation, and Evaluation work together in a systematic public health focused approach to accomplish the goals and objectives of this project.
The following are preliminary evaluative findings on the cumulative effect of Tobacco Free Amarillo from inception to 2008.
- Before the program began baseline studies yielded that 13.7% of 6th graders reported smoking in the past 30 days. The 6th grade prevalence has decreased to 3% in 2008. Over the seven and a half year project 6th grade smoking has decreased by 79%.
- Before the program began baseline studies yielded that 25.6% of 8th graders reported smoking in the past 30 days. The 8th grade prevalence has decreased to 11.8% in 2008. Over the seven and half year project 8th grade smoking has decreased by 54%.
- Before the program began baseline studies yielded that 42.3% of 9th graders reported smoking in the past 30 days. The 9th grade prevalence has decreased to 14.5% in 2008. Over the seven and half year project 9th grade smoking has decreased by 65%.
- Before the program began baseline studies yielded that 42.1% of 12th graders reported smoking in the past 30 days. The 12th grade prevalence has decreased to 23.5% in 2008. Over the seven and half year project 12th grade smoking has decreased by 44%.
