Tobacco
Free Amarillo is a comprehensive tobacco control
program aimed at preventing youth from using tobacco
and encouraging adults to quit. The project is funded
by tobacco settlement money from the Amarillo Hospital
District and targets Amarillo and Potter County. Funding
began October 1, 2001, and continues today.
Tobacco
Free Amarillo includes six components to reach throughout
the community wherever tobacco use can be battled:
school programs, community programs, law enforcement,
media, cessation programs, and program evaluation.
The
Amarillo Hospital District is the first hospital district
in the state to use tobacco settlement funds for a
comprehensive tobacco control program. Tobacco Free
Amarillo is based on a successful program conducted
in East Texas by the Texas Department of
State Health Services. The program is research-based
and proven effective because of the interaction of all
the components simultaneously.
